To properly shut down Windows 8.1 on your computer, display the Start screen or Desktop and then open the Charm Bar at the right side of the screen. Then click the “Settings” button to display the “Settings” pane. Click the “Power” button at the bottom of the “Settings” pane to view a pop-up menu of shutdown choices. You can then click the shutdown choice that you want to perform in the side menu that appears: “Sign out,” “Sleep,” Shut down,” or “Restart.” Selecting “Sign out” will sign you out of the current account on the computer. Selecting “Sleep” will cause the computer to hibernate. Selecting “Shut down” will shut down the computer. Selecting “Restart” will shut down the computer and then immediately restart it.

If you choose the “Shut down” command, note that it may take a few moments before Windows 8.1 will shut down entirely, so be patient.
