Add Metadata to a PDF in Acrobat: Overview
You can easily add metadata to a PDF in Acrobat. Metadata supplies additional information about a PDF file. To add metadata to a PDF in Acrobat, open a PDF file in Acrobat. Then select “File| Properties” from the Menu Bar to open the “Document Properties” dialog box. Then click the “Description” tab at the top of the dialog box.
You can click into any of the text boxes in the “Description” section of the dialog box to add title, author, subject, and keywords into the associated fields in the PDF. Keywords help users search the PDF. Separate keywords using commas.

Advanced users can click the “Additional Metadata…” button to open an XMP metadata dialog box for the PDF. Here you can add copyright notices and information, too. When finished, click the “OK” button to return to the “Document Properties” dialog box. After entering metadata, click “OK” to close the dialog box and apply your choices. Then save the PDF to preserve the changes.

- To add metadata to a PDF in Acrobat, open a PDF file in Acrobat.
- Then select “File| Properties” from the Menu Bar to open the “Document Properties” dialog box.
- Click the “Description” tab at the top of the dialog box.
- Click into any of the text boxes in the “Description” section of the dialog box to add title, author, subject, and keywords into the associated fields. Keywords help users search the PDF. Separate keywords using commas.
- To add additional metadata, click the “Additional Metadata…” button to open an XMP metadata dialog box, where you can add copyright notices and information.
- Then click the “OK” button to return to the “Document Properties” dialog box.
- When finished, click “OK” to close the dialog box and apply the metadata.
- Then sure to save the PDF to preserve the changes.
