Apply Theme Effects in Word: Overview

After you apply a theme in Word, you can then apply theme effects in Word. You can change the effects in a theme that change the look of objects in your document. Word uses various borders and visual effects, like shadows and shading, to give your objects a dynamic look and feel.

To apply theme effects in Word, click the “Design” tab in the Ribbon. Then click the “Effects” drop-down button at the right end of the “Document Formatting” button group. You will then see 15 different available effect options. Hover your mouse pointer over an effect in the drop-down menu to preview it on the document objects. Then click an effect to apply it to your theme. The first effect, “Office,” is the default effect applied. You can select this effect to return to the default theme effect applied.
