How to Leave a Group in Outlook

            To leave a group in Outlook for which you are not the sole owner, select the name of the group in the Folder Pane in Outlook. Then click the “Group Settings” button in the “Group Name” button group (where “Group Name” is the name of your Group) on the “Home” tab of the Ribbon. Then select the “Leave” command from the drop-down menu. Then click “Yes” in the confirmation dialog box that appears. Then click the “OK” button in the dialog box that appears to confirm you left the group to close it. The group is removed from Outlook and you cannot access its content, unless it is a “Public” group.

How to Leave a Group in Outlook If You Are the Sole Owner

            Alternatively, to leave a group in Outlook for which you are the sole owner, you must first assign a new owner before you can leave. To assign a member as an owner, click the “Group Settings” button in the “Group Name” button group (where “Group Name” is the name of your Group) on the “Home” tab of the Ribbon. Then select the “Edit Group” command from the button’s drop-down menu to open the “Edit group” dialog box.

            In the “Members” section of the “Edit group” dialog box, click the “Make owner” link to the right of the member entry of the member to make an owner. Then click the “Remove owner status” link next to your name. Then click the “OK” button to save your changes.

            Next, click the “Group Settings” button in the “Group Name” button group (where “Group Name” is the name of your Group) on the “Home” tab of the Ribbon. Then select the “Leave” command from the drop-down menu. Then click “Yes” in the confirmation dialog box that appears. Then click the “OK” button in the dialog box that appears to close it.

Instructions on How to Leave a Group in Outlook

  1. To leave a group in Outlook for which you are NOT the sole owner, select the name of the group in the Folder Pane in Outlook.
