Video Lesson:
This video lesson, titled “Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge,” shows you how to use Microsoft Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge.
How to Use Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge:
Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge offers the same features as the Copilot app for Windows 11 but in an easy-to-access side panel in the Microsoft Edge browser. Another benefit of using Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge is that you can still access it if using Microsoft Edge when it is installed on a device with a different operating system, like a Mac or iPhone.
To use Copilot Chat in Microsoft Edge, open Microsoft Edge and sign-in or select the desired Microsoft account profile in Microsoft Edge. Note that Microsoft Copilot shows slightly different options for a work or school Microsoft account than it does for a personal Microsoft account. Then click the “Copilot” button at the right end of the toolbar towards the top of the interface. This opens a “Chat” side panel at the right side of the screen, by default.
How to Use Text Prompts with Microsoft Copilot:
To select the speed and complexity of the response if using Microsoft Copilot with a personal Microsoft account, select a choice from the drop-down in the “Message Copilot” field at the bottom of the panel. To type a text prompt to Microsoft Copilot, type it into the “Message Copilot” field at the bottom of the panel. If needed, to upload a document, click the button that looks like a plus sign in the “Message Copilot” field and then select a desired upload option. Finally, to submit the text prompt and/or document for the prompt, click the “Submit message” button or press the “Enter” key on your keyboard.
Copilot then shows its response to your message in the panel. To provide feedback on the response, click the “Good response” or “Bad response” button below it, as desired. To instead share the prompt and response, click the “Share message and response” button. Alternatively, to copy the message, click the “Copy message” button. Then repeat this process, as desired. To start a new chat, if needed, click the “Start new chat” button at the top of the “Chat” panel. To close the “Chat” panel, when finished, click the “X” button in the panel’s upper-right corner.
How to Use Voice Chat with Copilot in Microsoft Edge:
Alternatively, to instead use voice prompts to talk to Copilot if your device has a microphone, click the button that looks like a microphone in the “Message Copilot” field. Then allow microphone access for Edge on your device when prompted. Then simply ask your prompts. If using a work or school Microsoft account, Copilot turns your speech into text in the “Message Copilot” field and you must then click the “Submit message” button, as usual. However, for personal Microsoft accounts, you simply ask your questions, and Copilot responds automatically and conversationally.
How to Show the Copilot Button in Microsoft Edge:
To show the Microsoft Copilot button in the toolbar if it doesn’t appear in Microsoft Edge, click the “Settings and more” button and select the “Settings” command. Then click the “Copilot and sidebar” category at the left side of the page and click the “Copilot” button under the “App and notification settings” section to the right. Finally, click the “Show Copilot button on the toolbar” toggle switch to set it to the “On” position.
