Create a New Folder in Windows 8: Video Lesson
This video lesson, titled “Creating a New Folder,” shows how you can create a new folder in Windows 8.1. The process is the same for Windows 8, too. This video lesson is from our introductory windows course, titled “Mastering Windows Made Easy v.8.1.”
Create a New Folder in Windows 8: Overview
In this lesson, you will learn how to create a new folder in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. After you begin to create and save files in Windows, you may want to create additional folders and subfolders to help you organize your saved materials. You can create a new folder in Windows 8 within almost any other folder on your computer’s hard drive. Sometimes you may also do this on shared network drives, assuming that you have the required network permission to do so.
To create a new folder in Windows 8, first open the folder within which you want to create a subfolder in File Explorer, so that its contents are displayed in the pane at the right. Then click the “New folder” button within the “New” button group on the “Home” tab in the Ribbon.

Windows will create a new folder within the right pane and highlight the name, which is “New folder,” by default. You simply need to type the name that you want to give to the folder and then click outside of the folder’s name box into the blank area of the window, or press the “Enter” key on your keyboard, to set the new folder’s name.
