Portfolio Categories in WordPress: Video Lesson

This video lesson, titled “Portfolio Categories,” shows you how to create portfolio categories in WordPress. This video lesson is from our complete WordPress 4.0 training, titled “Mastering WordPress Made Easy v.4.0.”

Portfolio Categories in WordPress: Overview

You can create portfolio categories in WordPress for your portfolios, just as you can create categories for your posts. Portfolio categories in WordPress are separate from post categories, however. To create a portfolio category, click the “Portfolio Items” button in the Navigation Bar within the Admin Panel. Then click the “Portfolio categories” link under the “Portfolio Items” section in the Navigation Bar to display the “Categories” page in the area to the right of the window. This page is used to create the categories you apply to portfolios.

To add a new category, start by typing its name into the “Name” textbox. Next, enter the slug for the category into the “Slug” textbox. The slug is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens. Use the “Parent” drop-down to select a parent category if you are creating a sub-category. Choose “None” if you are creating a parent category. Enter a description for the category into the “Description” textbox. Finally, click the “Add New Category” button to add the category to the list to the right.

To delete a portfolio category, hover over its name in the list and click “Delete.” Deleting a category does not delete the portfolios within that category. Instead, portfolios that were only assigned to the deleted category are left without categories. You can also edit any of the previously created categories by hovering over its name and clicking the “Edit” button.
