This video lesson, titled “Assigning Actions to Bookmarks,” shows you how to link actions to bookmarks in Acrobat XI. This video lesson on how to link actions to bookmarks in Acrobat XI is from our complete Acrobat XI training, titled “Mastering Acrobat Made Easy v.XI Pro.”

Link Actions to Bookmarks in Acrobat XI: Overview

You can link actions to bookmarks in Acrobat XI. This can be helpful if you want to make it easy for a viewer to access an outside website, search a PDF, or perform any number of different menu actions from within the Bookmarks panel.

To link actions to bookmarks in Acrobat XI, click the “New Bookmark” button in the Bookmarks panel and name the bookmark. It is helpful to name the bookmark in a way that lets the viewer know what action it is linked to; for example, “View Our Web Page.” After naming the bookmark, press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to confirm the name of the bookmark.

With the new bookmark still selected, click the “Options” button in the toolbar at the top of the Bookmarks panel and choose “Properties” from drop-down menu to open the “Bookmark Properties” dialog box. Click the “Actions” tab at the top of the dialog box. Click the “Select Action” drop-down to choose the desired action to perform from the drop-down menu of choices. After selecting the action, click the “Add…” button.

Depending on the action selected, an additional dialog box will open and prompt you to specify additional settings for the selected action. For example, if you are adding a web link, the dialog box asks for the URL for the link. After entering any required information, click the “OK” button. Notice that your selection has been added to the “Actions” section in the “Bookmark Properties” dialog box. You can then click the “OK” button to apply your action to the bookmark. In the future, when a user clicks the bookmark, the action you selected will be performed.
