Save a Presentation Template in PowerPoint: Overview

            You can save a presentation template in PowerPoint after customizing it by adding the desired slide masters and slide layouts. After you save a presentation template in PowerPoint, you can use it to create new presentations in the future.

            To save a presentation template in PowerPoint, click the “File” tab in the Ribbon. Then click the “Save As” command at the left side of the Backstage View. For PowerPoint 2013, select to save the file to your “Computer” and then click the “Browse…” button to the right. For PowerPoint 2016, choose “This PC” and then choose a folder to the right or click the “Browse…” button. In both versions of PowerPoint, the “Save As” dialog box then appears.

            In the “Save As” dialog box, type a name for the new template into the “File name:” text box. Then select “PowerPoint Template” or “PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Template” from the “Save as type:” drop-down. You should save it to the default folder PowerPoint then selects for you, so you can easily use it later. This folder is where PowerPoint stores its default templates. Later, you can easily select the template to create a new presentation by selecting it from the list of available templates that appears when you create a new presentation. To finish saving the template when you are ready, click the “Save” button in the “Save As” dialog box.

  1. To save a presentation template in PowerPoint, click the “File” tab in the Ribbon.
  2. Then click the “Save As” command at the left side of the Backstage View.
  3. For PowerPoint 2013, select to save the file to your “Computer” and then click the “Browse…” button to the right.
  4. For PowerPoint 2016, choose “This PC” and then choose a folder to the right or click the “Browse…” button.
  5. In both versions of PowerPoint, the “Save As” dialog box then appears.
  6. In the “Save As” dialog box, type a name for the template into the “File name:” text box.
  7. Select “PowerPoint Template” or “PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Template” from the “Save as type:” drop-down.
  8. Save it to the default folder PowerPoint then selects, so you can easily use it later.
  9. Click the “Save” button to save the template.
